The following is some information for you and
your student about HS Orchestra. If you have any questions, please call me at 922-5610 or via email ploos@highland.k12.in.us. I would be pleased to hear from you.
High School Orchestra is a credited course that meets every day 2:03-2:54. Every
six weeks, a letter grade is earned. The grade for orchestra does calculate into the student’s overall GPA, qualifies
as a fine arts elective for graduation, and is based on attendance at required events, participation in class, and completion
of class assignments.
Attendance for HS Orchestra is mandatory
and students cannot miss rehearsals for any reason other than those specified in the Student Handbook.
Orchestra students are required to wear a uniform at all concerts and performances consisting
of the following. Please see the handbook for details.
HS
Orchestra students are assigned an individual account that holds monies for them until needed for fees to events or other
expenses. Money from fundraisers held throughout the school year is designated to certain accounts--sometimes student
accounts and sometimes accounts that are strictly for Orchestra Booster expenses. Each student is required to pay a
$25 fair share per semester.
Student financial obligations will be periodically posted. Any student with an outstanding
obligation will have to pay before graduation.
Private Lessons are STRONGLY recommended for all students, regardless of current ability.
Students that study with private teachers advance much more quickly, have higher self-esteem, and meet challenges more easily.
A list of private teachers is available from Mr. Loos.
ISSMA Solo & Ensemble is required for ALL members of the high
school orchestra—beginning this year, all juniors and seniors will be required to prepare a solo. Check the calendar
for the specific dates. Note: State Solo & Ensemble is not required.
Highland Orchestra Boosters is a support organization
open to any adult who is interested in the advancement of the Highland Orchestra Program. The group meets monthly and
is an invaluable resource. They are responsible for organizing fund-raisers, printing programs, purchasing equipment,
etc. Please consider joining and attending our regular meetings. If you are interested, please contact me or President
Kelly Tiffany.
